First, my apologies for not having posted any content for a while now. Life just keeps getting in the way and time isn't cooperating., though it rarely does. This weekend we were stuck with an unexpected internet outage caused by "Progress" as new utility poles and streetlights were installed as there have been some big developments in the area over the last month or so.
As some of you who have followed this journey for a while may remember, I had been fighting against the Tucson Urban Ag Plan for years and after having lost the fight relocated to another site that had withstood the City of Tucson's attempts to annex the area for years. The reason for my unhappiness was the City's limit on animals and the way they figured these limits. As a small homestead business, I was made an "outlaw" because I have more than 48 laying hens. That 48 is the maximum allowed in the City on a property of 3 1/3 acres acreage with no maximum acreage limits. Yes, you read that correctly I must have 3 1/3 acres to have 48 hens and if I was on 100 acres I would still only be allowed 48 hens (roosters and male livestock, except for male rabbits, are prohibited unless neutered.) I'm fairly certain, that male livestock are required to be sustainable in animal husbandry of any form. There were other issues that related to garden placement, aquaponics/hydroponics and greenhouse placement and noise pollution.
So, I was ecstatic to get out of City Limits and have the freedom to be as sustainable as possible. That pic in the upper left corner is what the local streets look like now that the City of Tucson has successfully annexed this area. So we are looking for a new homestead location once again. I will keep you posted on any new developments.
Aside from that new development, we have been plenty busy finishing up projects and starting new ones. We had invested in some Key Lime, Myers Lemon, Peach, Pear and Plum trees and held off planting them until the annexation issue was settled. I'm glad we waited as I would have only had to uproot the trees once a new place was found. To solve my planting dilemma, we made barrel planters by cutting 55 Gallon, Food Grade, Poly Barrels in half and giving them handles and a decorative rim made from poly rope.
